  Forests
provide many important ecosystem services.
They protect soils from erosion, purify our water, and improve our air
quality. For example, for every ton of new wood that grows, trees remove
about 1.47 tons of carbon dioxide from the air, and produce 1.07 tons
of life-giving oxygen. The diversity of plants and animals that live in
our forests represent a wealth of cultural, medicinal, and environmental
resources that we are just beginning to discover. The health of our forests
is an indicator of the health of our total environment.
