 Young
forests, those up to 10 years of age, usually occur as a result of some
type of disturbance or change in land use. In the Lake States, these disturbances
can include tornadoes, ice storms, or fire. Young forests also result when
farmland is abandoned, when mature forest is cut, or when trees are intentionally
planted in a previously open habitat. A young forest is characterized by
an abundance of young tree growth, mixed with blackberry and raspberry brambles,
forbs, wildflowers, and native grasses. |
