Best Management Practices
Best management practices (BMPs) are practical and economical ways to
insure that forest resources on your land are protected during forest
management activities. All states in the region have developed a number
of BMPs for forestry operations as a guide to prevent damage to water,
wildlife, and soil resources as well as to limit the visual impact of
management activities. These guidelines are voluntary and landowners are
not required to abide by them. However, the only one that will be hurt
by ignoring these simple guidelines is you and the long-term productivity
of your land. BMPs are related to:
• Roads,
trails, and landings
• Soil protection
• Water quality protection
• Visual quality management
• Post-operation activities
