Summary: Major Points from Submodule 4
- Help from the public is important in the management of western rangeland weeds.
- In addition to the economic and ecological impacts caused by weeds and how this impacts humans, many invasive plants have more direct impacts on human health. Several weeds produce pollen and air-borne plant parts that are potent allergens, while some produce toxins that can cause hallucinations, blindness, or even death.
- When working with weeds, it is wise to protect yourself with gloves, masks, other protective clothing.
- There are many actions the public as well as ranchers can take to prevent, or at least curtail, the spread of weeds. Learning about weeds, volunteering in weed management activities, and preventing the spread of weeds can make a big impact on weed management efforts.
- Making weed management a team effort with neighbors, local weed management areas, and government agencies can all make positive impacts.
