Fence Out Livestock

A well-developed vegetative understory is needed by most wildlife species.  Plants that live underneath trees on the forest floor provide food and cover for wildlife.  Fence livestock from forests to improve habitat conditions for wildlife.  The photo illustrates the impact that cattle have on the vegetative understory.  Which side of the fence do you think cattle were grazing?  Livestock are in direct competition with wildlife and remove understory vegetation which provide wildlife food and cover.  Fences can also safeguard the forest from soil compaction and erosion caused by livestock.
