Part 1: Laying the Groundwork for Range Monitoring
Factors Influencing the Condition of Rangeland Resources
Management practices and natural processes can contribute to
changes in vegetation and soil productivity.
Processes and practices that may contribute
to variability in the condition of rangeland resources:
- Grazing and overgrazing
The addition of domestic grazers on rangeland introduces an ecological stressor
to the land and its resources
- Infestation of invasive, non-native plants
Non-native plants may encroach on native plants that are desired by domestic
grazing animals
- Drought
Can reduce vegetation cover and increase the potential for accelerated erosion
after the drought.
- Fire
Unnatural fire regimes can allow for increased encroachment by non-native
plants and can alter erosion patterns
- Natural and accelerated erosion
Several factors can contribute to modified erosion including fire and drought
