Part 1: Laying the Groundwork for Range Monitoring
Maps
Maps are essential tools for range monitoring. It is a good
idea to procure general maps of your ranch and surrounding area
that include:
- Soil and vegetation types
- Roads
- Range conditions
- Pasture boundaries
- Future improvements planned for the area including water developments,
burns, fences, etc.
- Topography
Ecological site descriptions (see
the NRCS web site) and Terrestrial
Ecosystem Survey (TES) units, used by the agencies
listed below, provide the most and best information to you. If there
is not an ecological site map available for your area, a soil survey
map or a general ecosystem type map can be used.
