Rangeland Monitoring in Western Uplands

Part 1: Laying the Groundwork for Range Monitoring

Maps

Maps are essential tools for range monitoring. It is a good idea to procure general maps of your ranch and surrounding area that include:

  • Soil and vegetation types
  • Roads
  • Range conditions
  • Pasture boundaries
  • Future improvements planned for the area including water developments, burns, fences, etc.
  • Topography
Ecological site descriptions (see the NRCS web site) and Terrestrial Ecosystem Survey (TES) units, used by the agencies listed below, provide the most and best information to you. If there is not an ecological site map available for your area, a soil survey map or a general ecosystem type map can be used.

If you haven’t already done so, contact the following agencies to see about map availability for your area.
