Global Utilization of Forest Biomass

Biomass is the most important renewable energy source used around the world today.  We can find places all around the world where countries are making use of bioenergy.

United States –Here in the U.S., the forest industry is probably the largest user of woody biomass.  Woody biomass produces more than 70% of their energy needs.

Sweden uses wood chips, recycled wood and black liquor (a by-product of the paper-making process) to create heat, steam and electrical power.  Woody biomass produces 25% of the country’s energy.

Brazil has an ethanol program based on sugar cane that provides a cost-competitive fuel for transportation.

There are opportunities to expand the use of bioenergy.  Many countries still have land available for energy plantations.  Integrating biomass harvesting for energy purposes with forestry and agricultural activities is another option.  No matter where and how we take advantage of bioenergy resources, we must do it in ways that are environmentally sustainable.
