Middle-aged Forests

____________________________________________

As a forest ages, the growing trees shade out the grasses, weeds, wildflowers, and shrubs that were present during the earlier years, and trees with small diameters prevail. Middle-aged forests, from 10 to 70 years old, are typically open woodlands, with little brushy understory remaining.
