Here are a couple of ways you can test out the "Variety is the Spice of Life" concept at home:
Got Kids? Got Patience?
Here's a way to test the body's wisdom in ensuring that you get plenty of all the nutrients you need. Tell your kids that for one day, they can eat all they want of their favorite food. This works especially well if their favorite food is something sweet. For that one day, they can eat as much as they want of that one food and NOTHING else. By the end of the day, we're betting that if they were eating sweets, they'll want protein, and if they were eating protein, they'll want carbs.
No Kids? No Patience?
You can run the same test on yourself. For breakfast - have a donut. For coffee break - have a donut. For lunch - think about having another donut, and then ask yourself - what do I REALLY want to have? Your body will tell you.
How Many Ways Can You Prepare Hamburger?
Survey your friends and family for all the possible ways they know to prepare hamburger - a staple in our households and our fast food industry. Check out the Taco Bell menu for the variety of ways they present hamburger. On a walk through the grocery store, check the shelves for all the ways you can incorporate hamburger into a meal. Is there any variety going on here?
The Body's Wisdom Changes With Age
When we were kids, we had some pretty strong preferences for high calorie, high energy foods. Beth LOVED Vienna Sausages, back when she needed the fat and calories for her growing body. Kathy LOVED Twinkies, and even ate them for breakfast when she could get away with it. But now, as 40-something adults, when Beth eats Vienna Sausages or Kathy eats Twinkies, they both feel slightly ill afterwords. With their changing metabolism they just don't need those kinds of calories.
So think about it. Are there foods you used to love but that you can no longer eat? Ask your friends and family. Share your stories with us! We'd love to hear them!
