Grazing Management - Techniques for Reducing Intensity of Use by Influencing Distribution

Riding
Riding is increasingly being used as a method to move stock out of riparian areas. The purpose of the riders in most cases is to move cattle away from streamside areas. Experience with this technique underscores the importance of knowledgeable riders who understand cattle behavior as well as the objective of the exercise. Poorly conducted riding can cause more harm to the riparian area and to livestock performance than having the cows remain along the stream. The efficiency of this technique is enhanced by the presence of alternate water and placement of supplements to increase the incentive to remain in the uplands.
