The Riparian Area Management Plan - Taking the photograph: landscape view

You don't need a fancy camera. Just follow the basic instructions included with whatever camera you use. Use a yellow pad or "photo placard" in each photograph to show the date, location, and, optionally, the time of day and direction of the shot. It is helpful to include a reference object, such as a marked pole, to indicate the size of other objects in the picture.

Using a marker stake to indicate height would allow you to track the growth of these cottonwoods.

One of the most difficult steps is having the camera set at the same vertical angle each year. Selecting a background reference point (notch in hills, rock outcropping, etc.) on which to center your photo will help.

For more complete information, it is useful to shoot the same site from several locations.
