The Riparian Area Management Plan - Recording the information

Keep a record of the site and the specific photo point location by recording the following:

  • The location marked on a map with a description of the area so the plot can be found by others (and by yourself a year later!);
  • The GPS readings (compass bearings) or other directions to the photo point (including distance) from the witness marker and the direction in which the photo was taken;
  • The allotment and/or pasture name;
  • The date of the photograph, type of film (ASA100 is generally best for outdoor pictures), and camera lens size (35 mm/70 mm), or digital camera settings;
  • Information that helps to explain what each photograph shows or that might be useful in making management decisions. This could include on/off dates, that year's rainfall pattern, any unusual events that occurred that year, notations on vegetation, and reasons for selecting that photo point.

With a sequence of photographs taken each year, the lessee on this land could have illustrated the significant increase in size and canopy cover of these box elders over the past two decades.
