Rangeland Monitoring in Western Uplands

Part 5: Setting Realistic Objectives and Goals

Ecological Sites

Knowing the ecological site classification(s) for your ranch is important in establishing management objectives based on the potential of the land to produce resources. Similar ecological sites support similar plant communities. The ecological site designation for your land will identify the potential natural plant community for your land.

In practical terms, you will establish management objectives based on the potential for your land as established by the ecological site classification. State or federal agencies involved in planning your monitoring program can help you identify and designate the ecological site(s) present on your ranch.
