Part 3: Plant Classification

By gaining an understanding of plant classification and anatomy, you will be better equipped to characterize plant communities on your ranch. This sub module is not intended to teach plant taxonomy, but to introduce you to the basics you will need to conduct a reliable monitoring program.

 

The basics covered include:

 

  • Plant growth characteristics

  • An understanding of why plant identification can be important

  • Basic anatomy of grasses, sedges and rushes, forbs, and shrubs

  • Examples of common western rangeland plants
