Row removal

The row removal technique is very straightforward.  An entire row is removed from a multi-row windbreak in order to improve the health and function of the remaining rows.  This practice can be done by hand with chain saws, or may be done using large equipment such as bulldozers.  Caution must be exercised at all times when cutting large trees.  If you’re not familiar with this process, get help from a professional logger or arborist.

Once trees have been cut down, disposal is the next step.  If the trees are large enough, and straight-stemmed, they may be utilized for lumber if a market exists.  Contact your local service forester for more information on potential markets for sawlogs.  If there is no local market for sawtimber, trees may be cut into firewood.  Even if markets do exist for the large material, the smaller branches and twigs must be disposed of.  Piling and burning is a simple yet effective method of disposal.  Most deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in the fall) are efficient sprouters.  Preventing sprouts is another step that may be necessary with row removal.
