Wetland soils

Introduction page 1 of 4

A hydric or wetland soil is a soil that is saturated, flooded, or ponded long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions that favor the growth and regeneration of hydrophytic vegetation. The National Technical Committee for Hydric soils has developed a list of soil types that are considered hydric. Click here to view the list. In this section you will become familiar with some soil types along with some commonly used procedures for identifying wetland soils. A basic knowledge of hydric soils will help you recognize possible wetlands on your property.
