Economic Decision-Making - Introduction

Key Points

Wildfire results in a variety of economic challenges. While the challenges for each specific land operation will be different, the tools contained in this section will aid individual decisions.

By Duane Griffith, Extension Farm Management Specialist, Montana State University

The economic impacts of a wildfire vary tremendously between individual farmers and ranchers. The time of the year, type and amount of property lost, and possible remedies affect what courses of action are taken.

This tutorial cannot begin to cover the various details involved for individual producers. The intent here is to provide a list of resources that will aid producers in working through an analysis process for individual decisions on their operations.

The analysis tools described in this tutorial are all located at the Montana State University Econ Extension website, software download section.

These analysis tools can be downloaded for use on your own computer. The tools discussed within this tutorial are Excel spreadsheets. In order to use these tools, you must have Microsoft Excel, version 97 or newer. Some of the spreadsheets will run in Excel 95.
