Once common, naturally occurring flooded bottomlands are rare today. Green tree reservoirs are actively managed bottomland hardwood wetlands that are artificially flooded in the fall and winter. These areas are important for wildlife. Green tree reservoirs are especially valuable as winter habitat for waterfowl, such as wood ducks and mallards, that feed on fallen acorns and seeds.
