Unit 1: Understanding Bioenergy Resources
Introduction

Forestlands account for 30% of the Earth’s surface (5).  These forests meet many human needs—timber production, protection of the environment, wildlife habitats, and recreation areas.  On a global level, these forests also hold a vast supply of woody biomass that is potentially available for bioenergy and bio-based products.

We can benefit the environment and the economy by using woody biomass.  By harvesting woody biomass for energy

-we burn less fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gases

-our forests are healthier

-we reduce the risks of wildfires and

-we have more employment opportunities in rural communities.
