Module 1: Understanding Bioenergy Resources
Introduction
Using wood as an energy source and a way to produce household products is not a new idea.  After all, people have been using wood to heat their homes for a very long time.  And trees supply us with all kinds of everyday products—paper, cardboard, furniture, flooring, beams, fruit, nuts—even golf balls come, in part, from a tree.
So what’s new about bioenergy and bio-based products?  Well, woody biomass (the leaves, branches, stumps, and culled trees) offers us a way to produce fuels such as ethanol and electrical power.  Woody biomass, unlike coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline is a renewable source of energy.  We can also harvest chemicals from woody biomass to make many of the products that traditionally have been petroleum based.  Using woody biomass to produce bioenergy and bio-based products is all about taking a resource that we have relied on for a very long time and finding new ways to meet our needs today and into the future.
This module includes 2 units that focus on understanding how people use forest biomass around the world and how local southern forests can contribute to our use of biomass here in the US.
    Unit 1: Understanding Bioenergy Resources
In this unit you will learn about the global utilization of biomass, the status of biomass in the US, the benefits of biomass, and promoting bioenergy.
   Unit 2: Southern Bioenergy Resource
In this unit you will learn about the southern bioenergy resource including the current status of southern forests and their potential for bioenergy.

After you complete all of the units, you should be able to:

  • Define Woody Biomass.
  • Describe the Woody Biomass Resource in the South.
  • Explain the Benefits of Bioenergy.

There is a post-test at the end of this module to test what you have learned.  Additionally if you are interested in learning more about a particular term related to biomass or bioenergy resources please click on either the “glossary” tab in the upper navigational bar or the “additional materials” tab at the bottom of the left hand navigational bar.
