Introduction |

Bottomland hardwood forests
generally occur in floodplains and are kept moist by
adjacent streams or rivers. These forests are characterized
by periods of inundation, and the presence of plants adapted
to soil saturation during the growing season. These riparian forests serve as the transition between river and
upland ecosystems. Bottomland forests can be broad in
expansive floodplains or narrow as they follow moisture
levels along stream channels. |
