Peatlands, more commonly referred to as bogs and
fens, are common boreal freshwater wetlands. Other names for
peatlands are moors and mires. Peatlands are dominated by partially
decayed vegetation, particularly mosses. The slow decay rate of the
vegetation is due to the low oxygen conditions in the wetland
environment. Peatlands have organic soil rather than mineral soil
which is dominant in most other wetland types. Bogs are acid peat
dominated wetlands that have minimal surface or groundwater flows
into or out of the wetland. Fens are also acidic peatlands but have
more inflow and outflow of surface or groundwater.
