Wetland hydrology

Primary indicators

inundation | saturation within 12 inches of surface | water marks | drift lines
sediment deposits | drainage pattern

Drainage patterns
Drainage patterns are most often found in wetlands adjacent to streams. Patterns may be eroded into the soil or vegetative matter may become piled against the thick vegetation or woody stems oriented perpendicular to the direction of water flow. Scouring may be evident around roots of persistent vegetation.

CAUTION: Drainage patterns also occur in upland areas after periods of considerable precipitation; therefore, topographic position must also be considered when applying this indicator.
