Unit 1:  Properties of Woody Biomass
Introduction

Wood is one of the most abundant resources available for use today by the bio-based industry.  It is also happens to be one of the most complex materials in terms of utilization. Wood is composed of polymers, which are large carbon-rich molecules, of lignin and carbohydrates that are physically and chemically bound together.  Woody plant species are so diverse that they grow in virtually every part of the world and can be harvested to produce solid, liquid or gaseous feedstocks for both energy and bio-based products.
