Submodule 8: How Invasive Plants Are Controlled

Other Factors Influencing Weed Control: Plant Factors

Correct identification of the target weed is critical when choosing an herbicide (see submodule 5). It is important to know your target weeds

  • Physiological status – Is it actively growing or dying?
  • Life cycle – Is it an annual, biennial, or perennial.
  • Classification – Is it a monocot (grass) or dicot (broad-leaved plant, i.e., forb or woody plant)?
  • Growth stage – Is it a biennial getting ready to bolt? Will it soon flower?
  • Does the plant have a cuticle layer that presents an obstacle to herbicide application?
