Habitat - Introduction

Habitat can be defined as "The place or environment where an organism or community of organisms live and grow." The habitat provides the conditions that allow the continued presence of the species.

Wildlife species require space to find food, cover, water, locate mates, and rear young.

Habitat for select wildlife species

Explaining the habitat needs of all wildlife in the northern Great Plains and northern Rocky Mountains is beyond the scope of this tutorial. However, examples can help illustrate key points. Therefore, we chose to cover the habitats of a select number of wildlife species that may be considered when landowners face various management decisions.
