Salt marshes

Distribution page 3 of 7

Found near river mouths or bays, salt marshes can be found along protected coastlines in middle and high latitudes of the world. In the United States they are mainly found on the east coast from Maine to Florida and continuing on to Louisiana and Texas along the Gulf of Mexico. The amount of salinity can vary in these marshes, but they are all influenced by the motion of ocean tides. Salt marsh plants cannot grow where waves are strong, but they thrive along low-energy coasts.
