Prairie potholes

Formation page 2 of 7

After the retreat of glaciers in North America over 12,000 years ago, millions of depressions were left behind in the glacial drift. Prairie potholes receive runoff from surrounding land due to their depressional nature. Water levels may fluctuate seasonally with different amounts of precipitation, potholes may even experience complete drying for several years.
