Playa wetlands like many wetlands
provide numerous ecological functions and values to people. One of
their most important functions is groundwater recharge.
Specifically, in the Southern High Plains they may be the only sites
for recharge of the Ogallala Aquifer. Playa wetlands also serve as
a source of irrigation water for irrigating croplands. Indeed, 70% of
the playas larger than 10 acres have had irrigation pits dug in them.
Urban playas are used for fishing, boating, and other recreational
activities and serve as storage for stormwater runoff. Numerous
hunters use playa wetlands for bird hunting. Not only are playa
wetlands important for waterfowl and sandhill crane hunters, but
hunters also pursue ring-necked pheasants in playa wetlands.
Landowners can earn additional money from their playa wetlands if
they pursue lease options with hunters or guides. |
