Dogwood
Species: alternate-leaved dogwood, rough-leaved
dogwood, flowering dogwood, stiff dogwood
Description: deciduous tree or shrub with leaves
that, in most species, are alternate (positioned directly
across from each other on a stem). The veins in the
leaf run parallel to each other and the leaf margin. Flowers
are in clusters at the end of the twig, and often are one
of the earliest tree flowers to appear in the spring along
with redbud. Fruits are round and are red, blue,
bluish-black or white, depending on the species.
Wildlife value: Songbirds, bobwhites, turkey, deer,
and bear eat the fruits. Woody parts also are an important
deer browse.
