Description: A summer annual grass that grows
in shallow water, stems reaching up to 32 inches tall. Slender
leaves are wider compared to most grasses. Seedhead
is a loose panicle, often somewhat drooping, up to
8 inches in length. Each panicle has small spikelets. A
serious weed of rice fields. Difficult to distinguish
from commercial rice cultivars with red grains. Note
that photo is of cultivated rice.
Wildlife value: Seeds are choice food of waterfowl. |
