Red rice

Description:  A summer annual grass that grows in shallow water, stems reaching up to 32 inches tall.  Slender leaves are wider compared to most grasses.  Seedhead is a loose panicle, often somewhat drooping, up to 8 inches in length.  Each panicle has small spikelets.  A serious weed of rice fields.  Difficult to distinguish from commercial rice cultivars with red grains.  Note that photo is of cultivated rice.

Wildlife value:  Seeds are choice food of waterfowl.
