Pigweed
Description: Large annual produces a large number
of small, shiny, circular seeds. Leaves are alternate
and egg-shaped with wavy or smooth margins. Tips
of leaves are pointed or sometimes slightly notched. Stems
are hairy. Taproot is pink or red. Small green
flowers grow in short, compact clusters with bristly green
spines. Seeds are small, shiny, and black to
dark brown, and persist through winter.
Wildlife value: Very important food for songbirds and
upland gamebirds including bobwhites and doves. |
