Species Specifics

Did you know there are national private organizations dedicated to habitat conservation for bobwhites (e.g., Quail Unlimited), Mourning Doves (e.g., Dove Sportsman’s Society), waterfowl (e.g., Ducks Unlimited), deer (e.g., Quality Deer Management Association/and turkey e.g. National Wild Turkey Federation)?
Do you have a particular wildlife species in mind for your enterprise?  Is your land suited for that species?  Optimally, the particular wildlife species is already present on your property before investing in an enterprise.  It may be very difficult or impossible to establish or attract some species of wildlife on your property if none are present initially.

This module focuses on four species that historically have provided income opportunities for landowners, particularly in the southeastern United States.  These are bobwhite quail, mourning dove, waterfowl, and white-tailed deer.  Each species is described in terms of basic identification, life history, habitat needs, and population sustainability.  Population sustainability is the long-term continuation of your wildlife enterprise without over- or under-harvesting wildlife.

By necessity, these sections are brief; there have been entire books written about these topics.  Each section also has a brief list of information sources for investigating further.
