Panicum

Types:  panicgrass, switchgrass, dove proso

Description:  Perennial or annual grass comprised of upright, tufted stems from a few inches to 4 feet tall with numerous spikelets.  The leaves grow from near the base of the plant.  Stems are bunched at the base forming clumps.  The spikelets are often open with husks that may appear purplish particularly later in the season.

Wildlife value:  Because of its abundance and wide distribution, panicums and in particular panicgrass are one of the most important foods for bobwhites, mourning doves, and ground-eating songbirds and  gamebirds.
