Sumac
Description: Deciduous shrub or small tree growing
from 2 to 10 feet tall with compound leaves having 3
to 31 leaflets on long stalks. Fruit is a tiny
drupe in clusters. The red, hairy fruit matures
in the fall, and leaves become bright red.
Wildlife value: Though a less preferred food source,
sumac berries persist into the winter when other foods
are scarce. White-tailed deer, Northern bobwhite,
opossum, wild turkey, and other numerous birds eat the
fruits. Bobwhites also use for roosting and resting.
