Greenbrier
Other names: Catbrier, sawbrier, sarsaparillavine
Description: woody or herbaceous perennial evergreen
vines, typically thorny, with tendrils for climbing. Leaves
with three main veins. Flowers are small trumpet-shaped
in clusters ranging in color from greenish to yellowish
or brownish. The initially green berry turns to red
to blue or black with one to three seeds.
Wildlife value: Berries are an important food for Northern
bobwhite and wild turkey, as well as for 40 or more songbird
species. White-tailed deer consume the forage throughout
the southeast. Eastern cottontails, marsh rabbits,
and swamp rabbits consume leaves and young shoots. Beavers
consume tubers of some greenbrier species. |
