Oak

Species:  white oak, overcup oak, swamp chestnut oak, chinkapin oak, southern red oak, blackjack oak, willow oak, and others.

Description:  Variety of leaf shapes, tree bark color and form, and size and shape of acorns.  All have male flowers that are tassels with small female flowers on the twigs.  Acorns are fully formed by September.

Wildlife value:  Squirrel, deer, bear, turkey, bobwhite, and larger songbirds feed on acorns.  Some, such as the white oak, are important deer browse.  Overcup oak grows in wet areas where waterfowl feed on acorns.
